| Manhattan is totally awesome. |
We have been blown away by our first few days in
Manhattan. The sights, the sounds, the smells, it has been complete sensory
overload. Our friend Mark from "Sealife" has been our tour guide taking us around
the obvious sights – Times Square, 5th Avenue, Broadway, Grand
Central Station, Central Park etc so we can get a feel for the place....later
that evening in true cruiser spirit he took us to one of the cheapest watering
holes in the big city – “Rudy's Bar and Grill” in Hell's Kitchen.....a district of Manhattan
and not as we mistakenly thought – a Gordon Ramsey restaurant.! A $3 beer is
quite a find.
We took an excellent walking tour of Soho, Little Italy and China
Town – who knew that many of the buildings ornate facades were built from
steel? We spent a lovely evening in the
company of Mark and some fellow yachties eating Dim Sum in China Town and Italian
pastries in Little Italy.

The anchorage where Wandering Star is at 79th Street is a little less than
ideal. The currents are incredibly strong – whizzing past so fast that the
dinghy is almost impossible to hold by hand and always needs to be made fast to
the boat. We are too big for the
moorings so decided to move 20 miles around to Port Washington on Long Island. Manhasset
Bay is very boat friendly with transient moorings and free dinghy docks. The town has all the amenities that we need
and it is just a 45 minute train journey into Penn Station. We moved the boat on Monday
back down the Hudson River past the Statue of Liberty and up the East River
through the notorious Hell's Gate where the strong currents rage....at one point
we were doing over 10kts over the ground. We
are now peacefully hanging off a mooring.
It’s been gray and wet so have decided to have a few days hanging out in
Port Washington before we head back into the city for more exploring.

I honestly did not know that Central Park was so pretty - reminiscent of a
Monet painting - it has been one of the big Wow factors for me so far.
How gorgeous to have such a lovely park in the center of a city.
I was totally awestruck by it and would almost be quite content if I didn't
get to see anywhere else....looking forward to a picnic there on a nice day.
